The story

The story behind Schmitt Sohne

Schmitt Sohne began in 1919, when Hilar Schmitt and his sons set up shop in Longuich, a small village on the Mosel River. Five generations later the family still runs it, now under CEO Juliane Schmitt, and it has become one of Germany's largest wine exporters. The grapes come mostly from steep Mosel slopes with blue slate soils, plus Rheinhessen fruit.

Fermentation happens in temperature controlled stainless steel at 50 to 65 degrees, never oak, which keeps the wines clean and bright. Production follows the German classification system, from Qualitatswein (QbA) up through Kabinett, Spatlese and Auslese. We have poured these for decades because they deliver real Riesling character at a working price.
