The story behind Roth
Roth Estate was founded in 2001, a tribute to the founder's maternal family name, and it sits today in the Foley Family Wines portfolio. The winery, tasting room and caves are in Healdsburg, in Sonoma County, and the Sauvignon Blanc grapes come mostly from estate and select vineyards in the Russian River Valley and Chalk Hill AVAs. That is cool, foggy country, and it shows in the fruit.
Roth Sauvignon Blanc is not a lean, grassy pour. A small slice of Semillon, historically up to 14 percent, or Viognier near 5 percent, rounds the mid palate and lifts the aromatics. Select tiers get bi weekly lees stirring for three months, then five months in neutral French oak. Vintages have taken gold at the Critics Challenge and Dan Berger's competition, silver at San Francisco Chronicle and Sunset.
