The story

The story behind Robert Mondavi

Robert Mondavi built his Oakville winery in 1966, the first major Napa Valley winery raised since Prohibition. He was 52, fresh off a family rift at Charles Krug, and he had one idea: California Cabernet that could stand beside Bordeaux. He planted heavily in To Kalon, a 440 acre vineyard first established in 1868, and released his first vintage that same year. The Reserve followed in 1971.

He also pushed varietal labeling, naming wine for the grape instead of a vague region, and aged his Cabernet in French oak for 18 to 24 months to keep vanilla out of the way. Constellation Brands bought the winery in 2004. The Cabernet is what we have poured here for over 30 years.

Which Robert Mondavi is right for you?

Robert Mondavi Private Selection Cabernet Sauvignon runs $9.99 for the 750mL, and the Bourbon Barrel Aged Cabernet is $14.99, a couple dollars more for the charred oak and smoke. Step up to the 100% Cabernet at $13.99 when you want the grape undiluted. The Napa Valley, Oakville and Reserve tiers sit well above these, and we will quote you on those when they land. Cabernet wants fat and char. Serve it at 60 to 65 degrees in a wide Bordeaux glass, and decant the bigger tiers an hour or two.
Good to know

Robert Mondavi questions, answered

Is Robert Mondavi Winery still family-owned?
No. Constellation Brands acquired Robert Mondavi Winery in late 2004 for roughly $1.36 billion. Robert's children and grandchildren still make wine independently through ventures like Continuum Estate and Michael Mondavi Family Estate.
What is the difference between Robert Mondavi Winery and Robert Mondavi Private Selection?
Robert Mondavi Winery bottles are the estate's premium Napa Valley wines, including Napa Valley, Oakville and Reserve. Private Selection is the budget line, made from grapes sourced across broader coastal California regions outside Napa.
What is Opus One's connection to Robert Mondavi?
Opus One was founded in 1978 as a joint venture between Robert Mondavi and Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Chateau Mouton Rothschild. It combined French and American winemaking into one luxury Napa Valley blend.
Why did Robert Mondavi invent Fume Blanc?
In the 1960s Sauvignon Blanc was unpopular in America, usually made sweet and cheap. Mondavi dry fermented it, aged it in oak, and rebranded it Fume Blanc after France's Pouilly-Fume. The style took off.
