The story

The story behind Opici

Opici Marsala comes from Sicily, inside the Marsala DOC, and the family behind it has been in American wine since 1913. Joseph and Esther Opici, Italian immigrants, built the importing business that formally took shape in 1934, right after Prohibition ended. That history is why this bottle sits on our shelf and not in a supermarket cooking-wine bin.

The blend is native Sicilian white grapes: 35% Catarratto, 35% Grillo, 30% Inzolia. It is fortified with distilled grape spirits to 17% ABV and made under DOC rules, with no caramel coloring and no flavor stretchers. The golden-amber color comes from blending older reserves into the multi-vintage wine. We have sold it for decades because it behaves the same every time.

Buying guidance

Which Opici is right for you?

The 750mL Opici Marsala is $7.99, and that is the bottle most people should start with. Step up to the 1.5L at $12.99 and you are paying about four dollars more for double the wine, which is the smart buy if you deglaze pans often. The 3L is $17.99 and earns its space at a big dinner. The Dry Marsala and Sweet Marsala 750mL list at $9.99 when in stock. Nothing here is precious, and nothing here tastes cheap.

Good to know

Opici questions, answered

What is Opici Marsala?
Opici Marsala is a fortified wine from the Marsala DOC in Sicily, made from Catarratto, Grillo and Inzolia grapes and fortified to 17% ABV. It is a value bottle used for both cooking and sipping.
Is Opici Marsala sweet or dry?
Opici makes both. The standard 750mL, 1.5L and 3L bottles are the sweet style, with brown sugar and dried fruit notes, while the Dry Marsala 750mL shows baked fruit and a drier finish.
What grapes are in Opici Marsala?
The blend is 35% Catarratto, 35% Grillo and 30% Inzolia, all native Sicilian white varieties. The amber color comes from blending in older aged reserves, not from caramel coloring.
Can you drink Opici Marsala or is it only for cooking?
You can drink it. Serve it slightly chilled at about 59F or at room temperature in a brandy snifter, and pair it with blue cheese, salted nuts or fresh fruit after the meal.
