The story

The story behind Malibu

Malibu started with a simple idea in 1978, when British spirits men Tom Jago, Peter Fleck and James Espey tasted a coconut flavored rum called Coco Rico and saw a market for it. The brand launched commercially in 1980 with a Barbados rum base, and the formula still leans on that Caribbean heritage: a light column still white rum drawn from sugarcane molasses, lightly aged in oak, then blended with natural coconut extract, water and sugar.

At 21 percent ABV, Malibu is legally a rum-based liqueur rather than a straight rum, and that lower proof is exactly why it mixes so easily. Pernod Ricard has owned the brand since 2005. We have stocked it on Jericho Turnpike for years because it does one job better than almost anything else on the shelf: it turns pineapple juice into a drink.

Good to know

Malibu questions, answered

Is Malibu technically a rum?
No. Malibu is legally a rum-based liqueur, not a straight rum, because it is bottled at 21 percent ABV and contains added sugar, which puts it below the minimum proof many countries require for rum.
Does Malibu Rum go bad or expire?
Yes, it carries a recommended shelf life. Malibu specifies about two years for Malibu Original and the flavored expressions, and roughly one year for the ready to drink canned cocktails. Keep it out of direct sun.
Is Malibu Rum vegan?
No, it is not certified vegan. Malibu contains no animal derived ingredients, but one of its primary sugar suppliers uses a refining process that is not vegan friendly, so the brand does not carry the certification.
Does Malibu Rum contain nuts or tree nuts?
No. Malibu Original contains no tree nuts or peanuts. It does contain coconut extract, but coconuts are botanically a fruit rather than a nut, so the label stays clear of nut allergens.
Is Malibu Rum gluten-free?
Yes. Malibu Original, Malibu Black and the fruit flavors are gluten free, since the ingredients and distillation process used for the base rum contain no gluten. Check the label if you have other allergies.
