The story

The story behind Louis Grimaud

Cognac is a protected French brandy from the Charente region, distilled from white grapes and aged in oak, and the label letters tell you how long it rested: VS for the youngest blend, VSOP for a step up, XO for the oldest. Louis Grimaud is a house we carry across all three tiers, which is the honest way to judge any Cognac, side by side rather than by the story on the bottle.

We have sold brandy on this counter for over thirty years, and we treat Louis Grimaud as a working house rather than a showpiece. The VS is bright and grape forward, the VSOP rounds out with oak and dried fruit, and the XO shows the depth that only time in cask gives. We cannot tell you the exact stills or the family history behind the label, and we will not invent one. What we can tell you is how each bottle pours.

Buying guidance

Which Louis Grimaud is right for you?

The pricing here follows the age in the bottle, which is how Cognac has always worked. Louis Grimaud VS sits at $28.99, an easy entry point for cocktails and highballs. The VSOP at $44.99 is the middle child and the one most of our regulars take home, since it sips neat without asking much. The XO at $119.99 is the special occasion pour, and worth the step up when the glass is the point.

Louis Grimaud cocktails and pairings

Cognac likes fat, salt and a little sweetness. Serve the VS in a Sidecar or highball, the VSOP neat beside roasted poultry, and the XO after dinner with dark chocolate.
Good to know

Louis Grimaud questions, answered

What do VS, VSOP and XO mean on a Cognac label?
They are age designations for the youngest eau de vie in the blend. VS means at least two years in oak, VSOP at least four, and XO at least ten. Older blends generally taste rounder and less grape forward.
Is Louis Grimaud a good Cognac for beginners?
Yes, the VS is a sensible starting point. It is bright and grape forward rather than heavy on oak, so it works in a Sidecar or a highball while you decide whether you prefer the richer VSOP.
Can I get Louis Grimaud Cognac delivered on Long Island?
We offer same day or next day delivery across Nassau and Suffolk, free on orders over $250, plus free curbside pickup at our Commack shop. Spirits are for local delivery and pickup only, not shipping.
Should I drink Cognac neat or on the rocks?
Both are correct. Neat lets you taste the full blend, and a single large ice cube softens the alcohol and pulls out caramel and dried fruit. Try the VSOP each way and pick your side.
How does Cognac differ from other brandy?
Cognac must come from the Charente region of France, be distilled from white grapes and aged in oak. Other brandies follow similar methods elsewhere, so the protected origin is what separates Cognac from the wider category.
