The story

The story behind Laphroaig

Donald and Alexander Johnston took out the license at Laphroaig in 1815, on Islay's southern coast near Port Ellen. Two centuries on, the distillery still floor malts roughly 20 percent of its own barley and cold smokes it 10 to 12 hours over hand cut peat from its own bogs, which is why the whisky tastes of iodine, brine and bandages rather than bonfire alone. The small, squat copper stills and slow distillation lock that tarry character in.

In 1994 Prince Charles, now King Charles III, granted the distillery a Royal Warrant, the only single malt to hold one directly from him. We have poured this Scotch for decades and the argument has not changed: people either love it or leave the room.

Good to know

Laphroaig questions, answered

How do you pronounce Laphroaig?
It is pronounced la-FROYG. The name comes from the Scottish Gaelic Lag Bhròdhaig, meaning the hollow of Broad Bay, which describes the distillery's setting on Islay's southern coast.
What does Laphroaig taste like?
It tastes of intense peat smoke, medicinal seaweed, iodine and brine, with vanilla and caramel sweetness underneath from first fill ex-bourbon American oak. The 10 Year Old is the clearest introduction to that profile.
Why does Laphroaig taste like medicine or iodine?
The flavor comes from Islay peat used to dry the barley. Those bogs hold decomposed heather, moss and seaweed lashed by sea spray, and burning them releases phenolic compounds that read as iodine, seaweed and bandages.
Who owns Laphroaig today?
Laphroaig is owned by Suntory Global Spirits, a subsidiary of Japan's Suntory Holdings. The distillery itself has operated on Islay's southern coast since the Johnston brothers took out its license in 1815.
