The story

The story behind Laird's

William Laird came from Scotland to New Jersey in 1698 and made apple spirits for his own table. In 1780 his descendant Robert Laird recorded the first commercial sale and took U.S. Distillery License No. 1, a number the family still holds. Laird's has been at it ever since, which makes it the oldest distilled spirits company in the country.

Aging, blending and bottling happen in Scobeyville, Colts Neck, Monmouth County. Since 1975 the actual distillation moved to North Garden in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley, after New Jersey's apple orchards thinned out. The apples are still fresh and tree ripened, Red Delicious, Golden Delicious, Jonathan, Granny Smith, Gala and Pink Lady, pressed to cider and fermented with no added sugar.

Two styles run through the lineup: blended Applejack built for mixing, and straight apple brandy for sipping. Proof climbs as the barrels get older.

Good to know

Laird's questions, answered

Is Laird's Applejack a whiskey or a brandy?
Laird's Applejack is a brandy, distilled from fermented apple cider rather than grain. The blended version adds neutral grain spirits, while the straight expressions are 100% apple distillate aged in charred oak.
What is the oldest distillery in the United States?
Laird's is the oldest licensed distillery in the United States, with family distillation dating to 1698 and U.S. Distillery License No. 1 issued in 1780. Operations are based in Scobeyville, New Jersey.
What is the difference between Applejack and apple brandy?
Applejack is the historic name for apple spirits, and Laird's uses it for the blended bottling of 35% apple brandy and 65% grain spirit. Straight apple brandy is 100% apple distillate with no grain added.
How do you drink Laird's Applejack?
Mix the blended Applejack in a Jack Rose, an Old Fashioned or with ginger beer and lime. The straight and older expressions sip neat or on the rocks, and they pair well with aged cheddar and cured meat.
