The story behind Kraken
Kraken arrived in 2010 from Proximo Spirits, the Beckmann family company in Jersey City, and the base rum is distilled in Trinidad from sweet molasses pressed from local sugarcane. Those component rums rest in oak one to two years before blending with a proprietary set of 13 spices, vanilla and cinnamon and ginger and clove doing most of the talking. The ink black color comes from caramel coloring, and the bottle is a Victorian flagon replica with dual hoop handles, originally meant to lash a bottle down in heavy seas.
What separates Kraken from the spiced rum shelf is proof. The flagship is bottled at 47% ABV, 94 proof, where most competitors sit near 35%. We have poured it for Long Island customers for years, and that backbone is why it holds up in a Dark and Stormy instead of disappearing into one.
