The story

The story behind Kahlua

Kahlua began in Veracruz, Mexico, in 1936, when Señor Blanco, Montalvo Lara, and the Alvarez brothers, coffee farmers, put distilled sugarcane rum together with their own Arabica beans. The beans are shade grown, and the cherries can take up to six years to mature. After harvest the beans dry and rest in burlap for six months, then get roasted and rested four weeks with the rum before bottling. Start to finish, that is up to seven years.

We have poured Kahlua behind this counter for over thirty years, and the bottle has not changed its job. It is coffee first, sweet second, and it holds its place in a glass of milk or a mug of cocoa without argument.

What is Kahlua made of?
Kahlua is made from 100% shade grown Arabica coffee beans and distilled sugarcane rum. The roasted beans rest four weeks with the rum before bottling. There are no grapes or agave in it.
How much alcohol is in Kahlua?
The original Kahlua Coffee is bottled at 20% ABV, or 40 proof, in the US market. Flavored expressions generally run 16% to 20% ABV, and Kahlua Midnight is the strong one at 35% ABV, 70 proof.
Where is Kahlua from?
