Jura Scotch-single
Island single malt from one distillery on one Hebridean isle.
The story behind Jura
Jura has been distilled at Craighouse on the Isle of Jura since Archibald Campbell founded the original Small Isles Distillery in 1810. That plant closed in 1901 and fell into ruin. Local landowners Robin Fletcher and Tony Riley-Smith rebuilt it between 1960 and 1963, largely to keep islanders employed, and it remains the only legal distillery on Jura. Whyte & Mackay owns it today.
The house style comes from the stills: lantern-shaped copper pots roughly 7.7 meters tall, among the tallest in Scotland. That height strips out heavy compounds and leaves a lighter, fruitier spirit than most island malts. Water comes from Market Loch, fed by streams off the quartzite Paps of Jura. Most spirit matures in American white oak ex-bourbon barrels, with Oloroso, Pedro Ximenez and rye cask finishes across the range.
