The story

The story behind Jim Beam

Jacob Beam, born Johannes Jacob Boehm, sold his first barrels of Old Jake Beam Sour Mash in Kentucky in 1795. The name on the label changed in 1943 to honor James B. Beam, the fourth generation who rebuilt the distillery in 120 days after Prohibition ended. Jim Beam still ferments with the same proprietary yeast strain Jim Beam himself cultivated in 1933.

The mash bill is traditional Kentucky: at least 51 percent corn, balanced with rye and malted barley, cut with limestone filtered water that is high in calcium and low in iron. It is sour mashed, column distilled, and aged in newly charred American white oak. We have poured it across this counter for more than thirty years.

Good to know

Jim Beam questions, answered

Is Jim Beam a bourbon?
Yes, Jim Beam is a Kentucky straight bourbon whiskey. Federal rules require a mash bill of at least 51 percent corn, distillation under 160 proof, and aging in new charred oak, all of which Jim Beam meets.
Who founded Jim Beam and when?
Jacob Beam founded the distillery in 1795, selling Old Jake Beam Sour Mash. The brand took the Jim Beam name in 1943 to honor James B. Beam, who rebuilt operations after Prohibition.
What proof is Jim Beam bourbon?
The flagship White Label is bottled at 80 proof, or 40 percent alcohol by volume. Jim Beam Black and Devil's Cut both come in at 90 proof, and Double Oak at 86 proof.
How long is Jim Beam aged?
White Label carries a four year age statement. Jim Beam Black is aged seven years, and Double Oak is matured a second time in a freshly charred barrel for extra oak character.
