Il Poggione Italian Red
Montalcino Sangiovese, poured in Commack for thirty years.
The story behind Il Poggione
Il Poggione comes from Montalcino, the hill town in southern Tuscany where Brunello di Montalcino is grown. The wine is Sangiovese, the local Brunello clone, and the appellation holds DOCG status, the top tier in Italian wine law. That means the grape, the zone and the aging are all fixed by rule, not by marketing.
We have carried this estate for decades, and the reason is simple: it tastes like the place. Rosso di Montalcino gives you the same Sangiovese in a younger, friendlier frame. Brunello takes the time it takes. Both are dry, savory and built for food, which is why they never leave our Italian red shelf for long.
