The story

The story behind Il Bastardo

Sangiovese is Italy's workhorse red grape, the backbone of Chianti and a dozen other regional wines. In its everyday form it is lighter than Cabernet, higher in acid, and built around sour cherry and dried herb notes with a dry, dusty finish. It wants food, not a quiet glass on its own.

We stock Il Bastardo Sangiovese in two sizes at our Commack shop, a 750mL bottle and a 1.5L. It is a straightforward, uncomplicated Italian red, the kind you keep on hand for pasta night.

Good to know

Il Bastardo questions, answered

What kind of wine is Il Bastardo Sangiovese?
It is a dry Italian red made from the Sangiovese grape. Expect sour cherry, dried herb and a firm acidic finish rather than heavy oak or ripe jam.
How should I serve and pair it?
Serve it a touch below room temperature in a normal wine glass. It works with tomato sauce, pizza, roasted sausage, mushrooms and aged cheese, and it is not a sipping wine.
