The story

The story behind Herradura

Herradura has been made at the Hacienda San José del Refugio in Amatitán, Jalisco since Félix López registered the distillery in 1870. The name and the downward horseshoe came later, registered in 1928 after Aurelio López found a horseshoe in the agave fields and kept it for luck. Every drop is 100% Blue Weber agave, slow cooked in stone ovens for 26 hours, then fermented on wild airborne yeast with citrus trees ringing the vats.

Double distillation happens in copper pot stills, and the aged expressions rest in charred American white oak well past the legal minimums. Brown-Forman bought the brand in 2007, but bottling never left Amatitán. We have poured Herradura across this counter for decades, and the Reposado, the category the house pioneered in 1974, still moves fastest.

Good to know

Herradura questions, answered

Is Herradura 100% pure agave?
Yes. Every bottle under the Herradura name is certified 100% Blue Weber Agave, with no added sugars or non agave distillates. The house grows its own lowland agave and ferments on wild airborne yeast.
Did Herradura invent Reposado tequila?
Yes, commercially. Casa Herradura introduced the first commercially marketed Reposado category in 1974, resting it 11 months in charred American white oak. That bottle is still the one we sell most.
Where is Herradura tequila made?
It is estate bottled at the Hacienda San José del Refugio in Amatitán, Jalisco, Mexico, under NOM 1119. Production has stayed at that lowland facility since Félix López registered the distillery in 1870.
Who owns Herradura tequila?
Brown-Forman Corporation, the American spirits company, bought Herradura in 2007. Bottling and distillation continue at the historic Amatitán hacienda, so ownership changed but the address did not.
Can I get Herradura delivered or pick it up locally?
Yes. We offer same-day or next-day delivery across Nassau and Suffolk, free curbside pickup in Commack, and free local delivery over $250. Spirits are local delivery and pickup only, not shipped.
