The story

The story behind Glenmorangie

Glenmorangie has stood in Tain, Ross-shire since 1843, when William Matheson and his wife Anne set up on the grounds of an old brewery. The Highland distillery runs the tallest copper pot stills in Scotland, swan necks rising 5.14 meters, about the height of an adult male giraffe. Only the lightest vapors climb that far, so the spirit lands delicate and floral.

Unpeated Scottish barley and hard water from the Tarlogie Springs do the rest. In the 1980s and 1990s, Dr. Bill Lumsden pushed wood management forward, finishing ex-bourbon cask spirit in ex-sherry, ex-port and ex-wine casks. We have poured these bottles across this counter for decades, and the style still reads the same: clean, bright, quietly complex.

Good to know

Glenmorangie questions, answered

Is Glenmorangie a Highland or Speyside whisky?
Glenmorangie is a Highland single malt. The distillery sits in Tain, Ross-shire, on Scotland's northeast coast, north of the Speyside region, and has distilled there since 1843.
Why are Glenmorangie's stills so tall?
The copper pot stills at Glenmorangie are the tallest in Scotland, with swan necks reaching 5.14 meters. Only light, pure vapors climb that high, which gives the spirit its delicate, floral character.
Is Glenmorangie peated?
Glenmorangie is unpeated. The distillery uses unpeated Scottish barley and water from the Tarlogie Springs, so the flavor runs fruity and clean rather than smoky.
What is the difference between Glenmorangie Original and Quinta Ruban?
Original 10 Year ages in American white oak ex-bourbon casks and tastes of citrus and vanilla. Quinta Ruban gets a port cask finish, adding dark chocolate, plum and mint.
