The story

The story behind Glenfarclas

Robert Hay founded Glenfarclas on the Rechlerich Farm in 1836, in Ballindalloch, Banffshire, deep in Speyside. John Grant bought the distillery in 1865 for 511 pounds, and six consecutive generations of Grants have run it since. That continuity is rare in Scotch and it shows in the glass.

The distillery still runs direct fired copper pot stills heated by gas burners. They tried steam in 1981, found it stripped the heavy guts from the spirit, and went straight back. Malt is 100 percent barley, water comes off Ben Rinnes, and most casks are European oak ex Oloroso sherry from Miguel Martin in Jerez. Low slung dunnage warehouses with earth floors keep the angels' share small, which is how Glenfarclas still pours 25 year old malt at a fair price.

Glenfarclas cocktails and pairings

Sherry cask malt wants salt, fat and dark sweetness. Keep the pour neat, add water to the 105, and let the food do the talking.
Good to know

Glenfarclas questions, answered

Is Glenfarclas a Speyside whisky?
Yes. Glenfarclas is a Speyside single malt, distilled at Ballindalloch in Banffshire, Scotland. It is made from 100 percent malted barley and matured mostly in European oak ex Oloroso sherry casks.
Is Glenfarclas peated?
Glenfarclas is unpeated in the modern sense, though older expressions can show a faint smoke trace from cask and still. The house character is sherry, malt and orchard fruit rather than peat.
Who owns Glenfarclas?
The Grant family owns Glenfarclas. John Grant bought the distillery in 1865 for 511 pounds, and six consecutive generations of the family have run it independently since, which is unusual in Scotch.
What is the difference between Glenfarclas 12 and 15?
The 12 Year Old is lighter and more citrus driven at 43 percent, while the 15 Year Old is fuller bodied at 46 percent with dried fruit, marzipan and cinnamon. We stock the 12; ask us about the 15.
Can I get Glenfarclas delivered or pick it up locally?
Yes. Glenfarclas is available for free curbside pickup in Commack and local delivery across Nassau and Suffolk, same day or next day, with free local delivery over $250. Spirits ship to the states where it is legal, confirmed at checkout.
