The story behind Glendronach
James Allardice founded Glendronach in 1826 in the Valley of Forgue, on the eastern edge of the Highland region. The distillery runs four traditional stills and draws its water from the Balnoon Spring, and it fired those stills with coal until 2005, when it switched to steam. Brown-Forman has owned the site since 2016.
What matters in the glass is the wood. Most of the spirit sleeps in Spanish oak from Andalucia, sweet Pedro Ximenez and dry Oloroso, and the core range is bottled at natural color with no chill filtration. That is why the 12 Year Old pours amber without a drop of caramel coloring. We have sold this Highland single malt across this counter for decades, and the sherry weight has not moved.
