The story behind Gancia
Carlo Gancia founded Fratelli Gancia in 1850 between Turin and Canelli, Piedmont, then went to Reims to study how Champagne was made and brought the method home to native Italian grapes. In 1865 he released the first official Italian sparkling wine. The aging cellars in Canelli, the Underground Cathedrals, were hand dug into tufa rock that holds a steady 12 to 14 degrees Celsius, and UNESCO recognizes them today.
Gancia still works two ways: Metodo Classico for the premium bottles, second fermentation in the bottle with 36 to 60 months on the lees, and Charmat in pressurized steel tanks for the fresh Asti and Prosecco. We have poured these for decades, and the family name still means something on this shelf.
