The story behind Ferrari Carano
Don and Rhonda Carano, Reno hotel and casino operators, planted their Sonoma estate in 1981 and released the first Fume Blanc in 1987. The fruit comes from Dry Creek Valley, Alexander Valley, Russian River Valley and Knights Valley, roughly 1,200 acres certified sustainable through the California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance. Foley Family Wines bought the winery in 2020.
The house style is a split fermentation: about 70 percent of the juice in stainless steel for bright acidity, 30 percent in older neutral French oak, aged sur lie two months and stirred biweekly for a creamy mid-palate. It is 100 percent Sauvignon Blanc, sometimes with the aromatic Sauvignon Musque clone, and it has held 92 point ratings from JamesSuckling.com across recent vintages.
