The story behind Elijah Craig
Elijah Craig takes its name from a Baptist preacher who opened a frontier distillery around 1789 in what is now Kentucky. Local lore credits him as the first to age corn distillate in heavily charred oak, which is why Heaven Hill calls him the Father of Bourbon. The trademark itself dates to 1960, Heaven Hill bought it in 1976, and the premium brand launched in 1986.
Every bourbon in the lineup shares the same mash bill: 78 percent corn, 12 percent malted barley, 10 percent rye, fermented on iron free Kentucky limestone water. It is distilled at Bernheim in Louisville, then aged in open air rickhouses around Bardstown. The flagship Small Batch blends no more than 200 barrels at a time.
