The story

The story behind Domaine Des Banquettes

Christelle and Patrice Andre built Domaine Des Banquettes in January 2002, but the family has farmed this ground since 1910 and sold into the cooperative from 1951. The cellar sits on a natural slope in Rasteau with a 9 meter drop from grape reception to the aging room, so juice moves by gravity and never through a pump. Thirty hectares across Rasteau, Violes and Sablet, planted to Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre, Carignan, Cinsault and Grenache Blanc, with old vines averaging 35 years.

The name comes from the Provencal word bancau, the stepped stone terraces where Patrice's grandfather kept his garden. We have carried these bottles for years because the wines taste like the place and the prices stay honest.

Good to know

Domaine Des Banquettes questions, answered

What does the name Banquettes mean?
Banquettes comes from the Provencal word bancau, meaning the stepped agricultural terraces cut into the hillsides where the vines grow. It honors Patrice Andre's grandfather, who planted his personal garden on one of those stone terraces.
Where is the Domaine des Banquettes winery located?
The estate and tasting cellar sit in the commune of Rasteau along the Route d'Orange, at the foot of the Dentelles de Montmirail and Mont Ventoux in southeastern France. The vineyards spread across Rasteau, Violes and Sablet.
How large is the vineyard area of Domaine des Banquettes?
The estate covers 30 hectares, about 74 acres. That breaks into 15 hectares in the Rasteau appellation, 14 hectares in Violes within Plan de Dieu, and 1 hectare in Sablet, planted on clay, limestone and stony soils.
Is pumping used during winemaking at Domaine des Banquettes?
No. The cellar is built on a slope with a 9 meter split between the grape reception and the aging room, so fruit and wine travel by gravity. That avoids mechanical pumping and keeps the fruit intact.
