The story

The story behind Dom

Alexandre Le Grand, a wine merchant in Fecamp, Normandy, commercialized Benedictine D.O.M. in 1863. The monk story came with the marketing; the formula came from Le Grand. Twenty seven herbs, roots and spices, among them angelica, hyssop, juniper, myrrh, saffron, aloe, arnica, lemon balm, thyme and cinnamon, are split into four groups. Each group is macerated and distilled on its own in copper pot stills, then the esprits rest eight months in oak.

The blend gets honey for sweetness and saffron for that coppery amber, is double heated, and ages four more months in cask. Over a year from raw botanical to bottle, at 40% ABV. We have poured it for Long Island customers for three decades, and the honeyed, woody, faintly bitter finish still reads the same.

Buying guidance

Which Dom is right for you?

Pricing here is straightforward. The 375mL of Dom Benedictine runs $20.99 and the 750mL is $35.99, with the 1L at $44.99. B&B starts at $21.99 for 375mL, $35.99 for 750mL and $47.99 for the liter. That puts a full bottle of the classic right in the $32 to $38 tier you see nationally, and the small bottles let you try both without committing to a liter. Good to know

Dom questions, answered

What does D.O.M. stand for on the bottle?
It stands for Deo Optimo Maximo, Latin for To God, most good, most great. Alexandre Le Grand trademarked the acronym as a marketing element to reinforce the drink's monastic heritage theme.
Is Benedictine the same as Chartreuse?
No. Chartreuse is made by Carthusian monks from 130 botanicals and leans sharp and vegetal. Benedictine uses 27 botanicals, is bottled at 40% ABV, and drinks sweeter and more honey forward.
What is the difference between Benedictine and B&B?
Standard Benedictine is the pure herbal, honey sweetened liqueur. B&B pre-blends that liqueur with fine French cognac, which cuts the sweetness and adds oak and a brandy finish.
Does Benedictine expire or go bad after opening?
An opened bottle will not spoil. At 40% ABV with significant sugar, it keeps indefinitely, though the aromatic notes may oxidize slightly over several years. Store it cool and upright.
