The story

The story behind Di Saronno

Di Saronno traces to a Saronno innkeeper's gift of amber liqueur to painter Bernardino Luini in 1525, and the recipe stayed local for centuries. Domenico Reina began selling it commercially after 1900 from his shop in Saronno, in Lombardy. The Reina family incorporated ILLVA Saronno in 1947, and the company remains family owned.

There are no almonds in the bottle. The marzipan character comes from apricot kernel oil, blended with caramelized sugar and the essence of 17 secret herbs and fruits, extracted under vacuum at low temperature. It is unaged. The hammered glass bottle arrived from Murano glassmakers in the 1970s and has not needed improving since.

Good to know

Di Saronno questions, answered

Is Di Saronno actually amaretto?
Yes, Di Saronno is an amaretto. Amaretto is the Italian category of bittersweet almond flavored cordials, and this is the best known brand in it. The label read Amaretto di Saronno until a rebrand finished in 2001 dropped the word.
Does Di Saronno contain almonds or nuts?
No. Di Saronno contains no almonds and no tree nuts despite the marzipan flavor. The base comes from oils pressed out of apricot kernels, blended with caramelized sugar and 17 secret herbs and fruits.
What does the word amaretto mean?
Amaretto comes from amaro, the Italian word for bitter, with the diminutive suffix etto. It translates roughly to a little bitter, which describes the almond trace from fruit stones that balances the sugar.
Does Di Saronno expire after opening?
Di Saronno Originale does not expire. At 28% ABV with high sugar it is shelf stable, needs no refrigeration, and holds its flavor for years kept out of sunlight. Velvet Cream contains dairy and is best refrigerated and finished within six months.
