The story

The story behind Crown Royal

Crown Royal was created in 1939 by Samuel Bronfman of Seagram as a tribute to King George VI and Queen Elizabeth's royal tour of Canada. It is made today in Gimli, Manitoba, on the shore of Lake Winnipeg, and owned by Diageo. The rye grain goes in the ground in fall, sleeps under snow all winter, and matures through spring and summer before distillation. The water is filtered naturally through limestone beneath the lake.

Northern Harvest Rye is the rye drinker's Crown Royal: a mash bill of 90 percent Canadian rye and 10 percent undisclosed grain whisky, aged a minimum of three years by Canadian law. Jim Murray named it World Whisky of the Year in his 2016 Whisky Bible at 97.5 points, the first Canadian whisky to take the title, and it repeated as Canadian Whisky of the Year in 2017.

The rye side of Crown Royal is short and serious. Northern Harvest Rye carries the flag at 90 proof, and the flavored and classic bottlings fill out the shelf.
