The story

The story behind Cook's

Isaac Cook founded Cook's in 1859, and it became the first American sparkling wine brand with a national following. The wine is made in Madera, California, in the San Joaquin Valley, using the Charmat method: secondary fermentation happens in large pressurized stainless steel tanks, not in individual bottles. Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Meunier do the work, and each lot is blended with older vintages for consistency.

Cook's is also one of the few American brands grandfathered into printing "Champagne" on the label under the 2005 U.S. France wine agreement, because it used the term long before the treaty. We have poured it in Commack for decades, and it still does the same job: cold, bubbly, and cheap enough to keep the brunch going.

Buying guidance

Which Cook's is right for you?

Cook's is a value brand, and we price it that way. The 750mL bottles of Brut, Extra Dry, Spumante and Sweet Rose all sit at $9.99, which is the kind of number that makes a mimosa bar realistic. Step up to the 1.5L magnums of Brut or Extra Dry at $15.99 and you are covering a table without a second trip. If you want to buy Cook's online, the Brut 750mL is the one we keep in stock most reliably, so start there and check the others before a holiday weekend.

Cook's cocktails and pairings

Cook's wants to be cold, 38 to 42 degrees, and it wants salty, fried food next to it.
Good to know

Cook's questions, answered

Is Cook's Champagne actually champagne?
Cook's is legally labeled California Champagne, not French Champagne. It is one of the few American brands grandfathered into the 2005 U.S. France labeling agreement because it used the term before the treaty.
Where is Cook's sparkling wine made?
Cook's is produced in Madera, California, in the San Joaquin Valley. The brand was founded there in 1859 by Isaac Cook and was the first nationally recognized American sparkling wine.
How is Cook's sparkling wine made?
Cook's uses the Charmat method, so secondary fermentation happens in large pressurized stainless steel tanks rather than in bottles. Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Meunier are blended with older vintages for consistency.
What is the difference between Cook's Brut and Extra Dry?
Cook's Brut is medium dry with apple, pear and citrus. Extra Dry is crisper up front but finishes slightly sweeter, with more pear and apple, so pick it if you want a softer glass.
