The story

The story behind Chateau Ste. Michelle

Chateau Ste. Michelle traces its post-Prohibition roots to the National Wine Company, founded in 1933, and the Ste. Michelle label launched in 1967 with Andre Tchelistcheff consulting. The reds are made at the Canoe Ridge Estate in Eastern Washington, where the Cascade rain shadow delivers hot days and cool nights. That swing builds ripe black cherry with real acidity. We have carried these bottles for over 30 years.

The house blends small portions of Syrah, Merlot and Malbec into its Cabernet for mid-palate depth, then ages in a mix of new French oak, new American oak and neutral barrels for up to 24 months. Wine & Spirits named it a Top 100 Winery of the World 24 times.

Good to know

Chateau Ste. Michelle questions, answered

Where is Chateau Ste. Michelle wine made?
The grapes grow and the reds, including Cabernet, are vinified at the Canoe Ridge Estate in the Columbia Valley AVA of Eastern Washington. The Woodinville estate handles white wine production and the visitor center.
Is Chateau Ste. Michelle Cabernet Sauvignon dry or sweet?
It is a dry red wine with minimal residual sugar, under 1 gram per 5 ounce glass. You get ripe fruit and structured tannin rather than sweetness, with a clean finish.
Who owns Chateau Ste. Michelle winery?
After decades under Altria Group, the winery was purchased by private equity firm Sycamore Partners in 2021. It was subsequently acquired by the Wyckoff family.
What grapes are blended into Chateau Ste. Michelle Cabernet Sauvignon?
Cabernet Sauvignon dominates, with small percentages of Syrah, Merlot and Malbec blended in depending on the vintage. Those additions round out texture and add layers of spice.
