The story behind Cantera Negra
Cantera Negra means Black Quarry, a nod to the volcanic soil where the Blue Weber agave matures in Jalisco, Mexico. Don Alberto Becherano began distilling as a hobby around 1985 and spent more than a decade refining a proprietary process: slow cooked agave, double distillation in small copper pot stills, deep well water. In 2006, American entrepreneur Lance Gildner found the juice on a trip to Los Cabos, secured an exclusive US import license, and brought Cantera Negra to market in 2015. Deutsch Family Wine & Spirits took a major stake in 2022.
Don Alberto's son, Dan Becherano, now runs production as Master Blender. The flagship line is 100% Blue Weber agave and additive free, aged in charred ex-bourbon and cognac barrels that leave whiskey and vanilla notes behind.
