The story behind Calico Jack
Calico Jack was launched in 1993 by White Rock Distilleries of Maine, and the base rum still comes off the five column still at Cruzan in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. Beam Suntory bought the brand in 2012 and kept the formula: distill clean in the Caribbean, ship to Frankfort, Kentucky, add flavor, cut to proof, bottle.
That five column run strips the heavy congeners out, which is why Calico Jack drinks light and sweet rather than funky. It is named for John Rackham, the 18th century pirate who flew the skull and crossed swords. We have poured it to Long Island beach crowds for years, and it does exactly what a value rum should.
