The story

The story behind Bread & Butter

Bread & Butter poured its first Chardonnay in July 2013, built by the Napa company Alcohol by Volume under co-founder Gregory Ahn. WX Brands bought the label in April 2017 and kept the recipe honest. The grapes are 100% Chardonnay, drawn from California growing regions that have included Carneros and Monterey, then put through malolactic fermentation to turn sharp malic acid into creamy lactic acid.

Aging happens in a mix of American and French oak, which is where the vanilla, toasted brioche and caramel come from. It is a deliberate California style: rich, oaked, uncomplicated. We have carried it for years because customers come back for the same bottle every time, and it delivers that.

Serve this Chardonnay at 50 to 55 degrees, so pull it from the fridge 15 to 20 minutes ahead. Cold mutes the oak you paid for.

Good to know

Bread & Butter questions, answered

Is Bread & Butter Chardonnay actually buttery?
Yes. Malolactic fermentation generates diacetyl, the compound behind butter flavor, so the wine finishes rich and creamy with vanilla and a popcorn note. That is the whole point of the label, and it shows in the glass.
Where is Bread & Butter wine made?
The brand is based in Napa Valley, California. Grapes for the standard releases are grown across multiple California vineyards, historically including cool-climate sites in Carneros and Monterey, then blended for consistency.
Who owns Bread & Butter Chardonnay?
WX Brands, formerly Winery Exchange, owns the label. The firm is headquartered in Novato, California, and acquired Bread & Butter in April 2017 from the Napa company that launched it in 2013.
Is Bread & Butter Chardonnay sweet or dry?
It is technically a medium-bodied dry white wine. Heavy oak aging, strong vanilla bean flavor and roughly 6.5 grams per liter of residual sugar give it a lush, sweet-seeming impression on the finish.
Can I get Bread & Butter Chardonnay delivered or pick it up?
Yes. We offer same-day or next-day delivery across Nassau and Suffolk, free local delivery over $250, and free curbside pickup in Commack. Wine ships only to states where it is legal, confirmed at checkout.
