The story

The story behind Beringer Founders Estate

Jacob and Frederick Beringer left Germany and founded Beringer Vineyards in St. Helena, California in 1876. It is the oldest continuously operating winery in Napa Valley, and it was the first house ever to take Wine Spectator Wine of the Year for both a red and a white. Founders Estate is a different animal: a California AVA Cabernet, not a Napa single-vineyard wine. More than half the fruit comes from Lodi and the California Delta, the rest from coastal vineyards, blended for consistency rather than address.

That is the point of the label, and it is why we have stacked it for decades.

The lineup

Founders Estate runs one red thread through several varietals. The Cabernet leads, in two sizes, with the rest of the line close behind.

Buying guidance

Which Beringer Founders Estate is right for you?

The Cabernet Sauvignon 750mL is $10.99 here, and the 1.5L magnum is $19.99, which works out cheaper per glass and is the size we hand people for a backyard table. Merlot and Chardonnay land at $10.99 in the standard bottle, with their magnums at $19.99. Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc sit at $9.99. Nothing in the Founders Estate lineup asks you to think hard, and that is the appeal. Buy Beringer Founders Estate online or walk in and grab it off the shelf.

Good to know

Beringer Founders Estate questions, answered

Is Beringer Founders Estate Cabernet Sauvignon a sweet or dry wine?
It is a dry red wine. The vanilla and ripe berry aromas come from oak aging, not sugar. Residual sugar typically runs around 3.8 to 6.5 grams per liter, so the palate reads dry.
Where are the grapes for Beringer Founders Estate Cabernet grown?
They are grown across California. More than half comes from Lodi and the California Delta, with the remainder from cooler coastal vineyards, blended for consistent ripeness and volume rather than a single appellation.
Does Beringer Founders Estate Cabernet Sauvignon contain sulfites?
Yes, it contains sulfites. Like virtually all commercial wines, sulfites are added as a preservative to stabilize the wine through bottling and distribution. If you are sulfite sensitive, ask your doctor before pouring.
How long can you store or age a bottle of Beringer Founders Estate Cabernet?
Drink it within one to three years of the vintage date. This is built for immediate consumption and does not improve with long cellaring. Keep it cool and dark and it will hold fine until you open it.
Is Beringer Founders Estate from the Napa Valley?
No. The winery is historic to St. Helena in Napa Valley, but Founders Estate Cabernet carries the broader California appellation because the grapes are sourced outside Napa to keep the price accessible.
