The story

The story behind Basil Hayden's

Basil Hayden's arrived in 1992, the work of sixth-generation Master Distiller Frederick "Booker" Noe, as the gentlest member of the Jim Beam Small Batch Bourbon Collection alongside Knob Creek, Baker's and Booker's. The name honors Meredith Basil Hayden Sr., a Maryland Catholic who led families into Kentucky in 1785 and was distilling a high-rye recipe of his own by 1792.

That recipe survives in the glass: 63% corn, 27% rye, 10% malted barley, matured in newly charred American white oak and bottled at 80 proof, the legal floor for bourbon. The old 8-year age statement came off the label in 2014; it is now blended from straight bourbons aged at least four years. The result is light-bodied, spice-edged and easy to drink neat.

Good to know

Basil Hayden's questions, answered

Is Basil Hayden's a bourbon or a whiskey?
Basil Hayden's is a Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey. Bourbon is a whiskey made from at least 51% corn and aged in new charred oak; this one uses 63% corn, 27% rye and 10% malted barley.
Is Basil Hayden's high rye?
Yes. The mash bill carries 27% rye, roughly double the 13% in standard Jim Beam recipes. That gives it a peppery, spicy edge while the 80 proof keeps the body light and approachable.
Why is Basil Hayden's only 80 proof?
It is diluted to 80 proof, the legal minimum for bourbon. That choice produces a lighter, more delicate spirit with minimal alcohol burn, which is why it drinks easily neat and mixes without overpowering a cocktail.
How old is Basil Hayden's bourbon?
The flagship dropped its 8-year age statement in 2014 and is now labeled Artfully Aged, blended from straight bourbons aged at least four years. The 10 Years expression carries an explicit ten year age statement.
