The story

The story behind Baron Herzog

Baron Herzog arrived in 1985, when David Herzog of Royal Wine Corporation set out to make kosher wine from California grapes. The family name runs deeper than the label: nine generations back to Vrbové, Slovakia, where patriarch Phillip Herzog was titled a Baron by Emperor Franz-Josef. The California line is the working heir to that title.

Fruit comes from Lodi, Clarksburg, the Central Coast and Napa, and nearly every bottle is Mevushal, flash-pasteurized so it stays kosher for service even when poured by staff who are not Sabbath observant. Fining and filtration agents are certified kosher, with no gelatin or isinglass. We have poured these for decades, and the Jeunesse line still sells out before every holiday.

Good to know

Baron Herzog questions, answered

Is Baron Herzog wine kosher?
Yes. Baron Herzog is produced under strict Orthodox kosher supervision by Herzog Wine Cellars in California. Nearly all standard expressions are Mevushal, flash pasteurized so the wine stays kosher for service even when poured by someone who is not Sabbath observant.
Who owns Baron Herzog wine?
Baron Herzog is produced by Herzog Wine Cellars, part of Royal Wine Corporation, led by David Herzog, who launched the California line in 1985. The family traces nine generations to Vrbové, Slovakia, where Phillip Herzog was titled a Baron.
What does Mevushal mean in Baron Herzog wine?
Mevushal means the wine was flash pasteurized during production. A Mevushal wine remains kosher even if opened, poured or handled by a non observant person, which is why restaurants and caterers rely on it. Nearly every Baron Herzog bottle is Mevushal.
Where does Baron Herzog wine come from?
The grapes are California grown, sourced from Lodi, Clarksburg, the Central Coast and Napa. The Herzog family's winemaking history is European, but the Baron Herzog line was built specifically around California fruit starting in 1985.
