The story

The story behind Barefoot

The Barefoot name goes back to 1965, when winemaker Davis Bynum bottled a garage Burgundy under it in California. The commercial brand you see today launched in 1986 under Michael Houlihan and Bonnie Harvey, and E. & J. Gallo has owned it since 2005. Jennifer Wall has been head winemaker since 1995. It is blended in Modesto from California Muscat, fermented cool in stainless steel and left unoaked.

We have poured Barefoot Moscato across this counter for decades, and the reason is simple: it tastes the same every time. Multiple lots get blended for consistency, a light spritz goes in at bottling, and the white sees zero skin contact. The Pink and Red get brief maceration with red grapes for color and berry layers. It took Platinum and 90 points at the 2020 Monterey International Wine Competition.

Barefoot Moscato is a sweet white wine with high residual sugar, built on peach, apricot and orange blossom aromas. Serve it well chilled between 40 and 45 degrees so the sugar reads fresh rather than syrupy.
What is the alcohol content of Barefoot Moscato?
The core Moscato expressions, white, Pink and Red, are 9.0% ABV. The flavored Fruitscato line runs lower, around 7.5% ABV. That is lighter than most table wine, which is part of why it goes down so easily chilled.
