Ballantine's Scotch-single
Blended Scotch since 1827, poured in Commack for decades.
The story behind Ballantine's
George Ballantine opened a small grocery in Edinburgh in 1827, at 19, and sold whisky on the side. His sons joined and the firm became George Ballantine and Son Ltd. Queen Victoria granted a Royal Warrant in 1895. The flagship blend marries up to 50 single malts and 4 single grains, anchored by two Speyside fingerprint distilleries, Miltonduff and Glenburgie, aged mostly in American oak.
In 1938 the Lord Lyon granted the brand its own coat of arms, still on every label, with the motto Amicus Humani Generis, a friend to all humankind. The flat rectangular bottle arrived during US Prohibition so a salesman could slip it into a briefcase without it rolling. We have sold Ballantine's across this counter for three decades, and that shape still stacks neatly on our shelves.
