The story

The story behind Bacardi

Don Facundo Bacardi Masso founded Bacardi in Santiago de Cuba on February 4, 1862, and the bat on the bottle came from fruit bats roosting in the distillery rafters, a symbol of good fortune his wife Amalia insisted on keeping. The house still ferments on sugar cane molasses with La Levadura Bacardi, the oldest continuous cultured yeast strain in the world, then distills in parallel columns for body and smoothness before filtering through 13 charcoals.

Cuban assets were seized in 1960, so production moved to Catano, Puerto Rico, the largest rum distillery anywhere. We have carried the lineup through every one of those decades, and the bottles on our Commack shelf are the same rum that won gold in Philadelphia in 1876.

Good to know

Bacardi questions, answered

Is Bacardi rum made in Cuba?
No. Bacardi was founded in Cuba in 1862, but the revolutionary government seized its Cuban assets in 1960. It has not been produced there since, and today it is made primarily in Puerto Rico and Mexico.
Why is there a bat on the Bacardi bottle?
The founder's wife, Dona Amalia, noticed fruit bats living in the rafters of the original Santiago distillery. In Spanish and Taino culture bats mean good health and family unity, so the family adopted one as the trademark.
Is Bacardi gluten-free?
Yes. Pure distilled rum is naturally gluten-free. Bacardi is distilled from sugar cane molasses, and any gluten proteins are eliminated during distillation, so the spirit itself carries none.
Can you drink Bacardi rum neat?
It depends on the expression. Silver is a mixing rum, best in a daiquiri or mojito. Aged pours like Reserva Ocho and Gran Reserva Diez are built for sipping neat or over one large cube.
How do I get Bacardi delivered or pick it up?
