Asbach Uralt Brandy
German brandy from Rudesheim, aged in Limousin oak since 1892.
The story behind Asbach Uralt
Hugo Asbach founded his house in Rudesheim am Rhein on May 11, 1892, and gave German brandy its name. When the 1919 Treaty of Versailles barred German producers from the word Cognac, Asbach coined Weinbrand, and in 1923 that became a recognized category under German wine law. We have poured it across this counter for decades.
Asbach Uralt is not Cognac and does not pretend to be. The base wines come from a wide spread of European white grapes, not one protected region, then go through double distillation in copper pot and column stills to a distillate near 75% ABV. The flagship blends roughly 25 distillations and rests a minimum of three years in small French Limousin oak casks, well past the six months German law asks.
