The story

The story behind Apollo Creek

Apollo Creek comes out of the Talmaza Valley in Moldova's Stefan Voda region, an Eastern European growing area that turns international varieties into everyday wine at volume. The Shiraz is 100% Shiraz, fermented in stainless steel rather than parked in oak, so the fruit stays forward and soft instead of tannic and brooding. That is the point of the label: young, semi-sweet leaning red built for the glass, not the cellar.

We have poured value reds from this part of the world for three decades behind the counter at 1171 Jericho Turnpike, and Apollo Creek behaves exactly as advertised. No decanter, no waiting. Chill it a touch and drink it with dinner.

The lineup

Apollo Creek keeps its lineup narrow and its prices flat, with the Shiraz leading a seven bottle family that all lands at six dollars.

Buying guidance

Which Apollo Creek is right for you?

Every Apollo Creek bottle on our shelf is six dollars, and the Shiraz is the one we hand people first. That is a real price for a real 750mL of Moldovan red, not a sale tag we will pull next week. At six dollars you can buy it by the half case for a barbecue and not think twice, and it drinks like a wine that cost more than it did. Call the store at (631) 343-7200 to check stock before you drive over, since this label moves fast.

Apollo Creek cocktails and pairings

Serve the Shiraz slightly cool, 60 to 65°F, and skip the decanter. It wants fat, char and salt.
Good to know

Apollo Creek questions, answered

What is Apollo Creek Shiraz?
Apollo Creek Shiraz is a budget red wine made from 100% Shiraz grapes in the Talmaza Valley of Moldova's Stefan Voda region. It is stainless steel fermented for forward fruit and sold at an entry level price.
Where is Apollo Creek wine from?
Apollo Creek is produced in the Talmaza Valley, in Moldova's Stefan Voda region. The brand is an import label built for high volume value distribution rather than a single estate winery.
Is Apollo Creek Shiraz sweet or dry?
It leans semi-sweet. The wine carries accessible residual sugar and soft forward fruit typical of value tier Eastern European reds, so expect a rounder, sweeter finish than a dry Syrah from the Rhone.
What food goes with Apollo Creek Shiraz?
High fat and charred food works best. Think barbecue brisket, burgers, grilled sausages or strongly seasoned pizza. Serve it slightly cool at 60 to 65 degrees Fahrenheit and skip decanting.
