The story

The story behind American Born

American Born started in Nashville in 2013, when Patrick Dillingham and Sean Koffel put out an unaged corn whiskey and called it moonshine. In 2017 Milestone Brands, run by Eric Dopkins and Chad Auler, bought the label and built it into a full whiskey family. The aged bourbon is never chill-filtered, so the fatty acids and esters stay in the barrel and the body stays heavy. The core whiskeys are bottled at 83 proof, a nod to 1783.

We have carried American Born for years and it has never needed a sales pitch. The flavored bottles use real fruit infusion, not synthetic flavoring, and hold 70 to 83 proof where most competitors water down to liqueur strength. Original Moonshine earned an A- from Drinkhacker and 88 points, Highly Recommended, from the Beverage Testing Institute.

Three bottles, one mash bill philosophy: corn sweetness up front, rye spice behind it, and enough proof to still taste like whiskey.

Buying guidance

Which American Born is right for you?

All three American Born bottles sit at $25.99 on our shelf, which is the honest value tier for a whiskey that is not chill-filtered and does not hide behind sugar. The unaged moonshine at 103 proof is the most spirit for the money. The Apple Pie and Sweet Tea hold 83 and 70 proof respectively, higher than the flavored whiskey norm, so you can pour them over crushed ice without losing the backbone. Buy American Born online and we will have it ready at the counter in Commack.

Good to know

American Born questions, answered

Who owns American Born whiskey?
Milestone Brands LLC owns American Born, led by Eric Dopkins and Chad Auler. They acquired the label in 2017 from founders Patrick Dillingham and Sean Koffel, who launched it in Nashville in 2013 with the original moonshine lineup.
What is American Born moonshine made from?
The unaged moonshine is made from pure corn, sugar and water, bottled at 103 proof. It is unaged corn whiskey in the traditional Southern sense, sweet on the front with a warm, direct finish rather than barrel character.
What proof is American Born whiskey?
The core whiskeys are bottled at 83 proof, or 41.5 percent alcohol by volume, a deliberate tribute to 1783. The Original Moonshine runs higher at 103 proof, and the Sweet Tea expression sits at 70 proof.
Is American Born bourbon chill-filtered?
No. The aged bourbon is never chill-filtered, which leaves the fatty acids and esters in the liquid. That keeps the body heavier and the flavor more robust than most whiskey bottled at this proof.
