The story

The story behind Allegrini

The Allegrini family has farmed in Fumane, in the Valpolicella Classica zone north of Verona, since 1557, and the estate itself dates to 1854. Giovanni Allegrini pushed the family toward estate bottling and single vineyard work in the 1960s, and that is the house we have carried on Jericho Turnpike for decades.

The grapes are the native Veronese set: Corvina Veronese, Corvinone, Rondinella and Oseleta. For Amarone the fruit dries for months at Terre di Fumane, losing 40 to 50 percent of its weight before fermentation. Palazzo della Torre runs a double fermentation, about 70 percent fresh fruit in September and 30 percent dried until December. Aging splits between French barriques and larger Slavonian casks.

Buying guidance

Which Allegrini is right for you?

Pricing here tracks the house ladder. Allegrini Amarone Classico is $79.99 a bottle, which is fair money for a DOCG Amarone from a benchmark estate in Fumane. Palazzo della Torre sits at $19.99, the value pick if you want dried grape weight without Amarone money. Valpolicella is $15.99, the entry bottle for a Tuesday dinner. Stock moves, so call (631) 343-7200 before a drive and we will confirm what is on the shelf.

Allegrini cocktails and pairings

Serve Amarone at cellar temperature, around 60 to 65 degrees, and give it an hour open. Palazzo della Torre wants something fatty and salty.
Good to know

Allegrini questions, answered

What does Allegrini make?
Allegrini makes Valpolicella, Palazzo della Torre and Amarone Classico from native Veronese grapes in Fumane, plus single vineyard and Recioto bottlings. The house is a benchmark producer in the Valpolicella Classica zone.
Is Allegrini Amarone dry or sweet?
Allegrini Amarone Classico is dry. The grapes dry for months to concentrate sugar, but fermentation runs to dryness, leaving a full bodied red with dark cherry and cocoa rather than sweetness. Recioto, a separate wine, is the sweet style.
What grapes are in Allegrini wines?
The core grapes are Corvina Veronese, Corvinone, Rondinella and Oseleta. Amarone and Recioto use the dried grapes, Palazzo della Torre blends fresh and dried fruit, and La Poja is 100 percent Corvina Veronese from one vineyard.
Can I get Allegrini delivered or pick it up?
Yes. We offer same-day or next-day delivery across Nassau and Suffolk, free curbside pickup in Commack, and free local delivery over $250. Call (631) 343-7200 to confirm stock before you order.
What is appassimento?
Appassimento is the natural drying of grapes before fermentation, used for Amarone and Recioto. At Allegrini the fruit rests in the Terre di Fumane facility and loses 40 to 50 percent of its weight, concentrating sugar, acid and flavor.
