Nose
Straight star anise, dark and oily, with a thread of black licorice and a faint candied sweetness behind it. Very direct, very aromatic.
Palate
Thick and syrupy in the mouth, almost oily. Sweet black licorice hits first, then the anise builds and holds, warm and rounded, never sharp. Sugar coats everything without turning cloying.
Finish
Long and warm, anise lingering on the back of the tongue, slowly fading to a soft licorice sweetness.
How to serve and what to pour it with
Serve neat at room temperature in a small stemmed glass, or over a single large cube if you want it looser. The classic move is three coffee beans floated on top, the con la mosca pour, which cuts the sugar with a little roasted bitterness. Sip it slowly, it is sweet enough to nurse.
