Chianti is a red wine from Tuscany made primarily from Sangiovese, the grape that gives it its bright cherry fruit, earthy undertone, and firm, food-friendly acidity. The name covers several zones and quality tiers, and understanding them is the fastest way to buy well. Our wine department carries more than 225 Chiantis, from everyday bottles to single-vineyard Classicos, so you can match the wine to the meal and the budget.
Know the tiers and zones
- Chianti (basic): The broadest zone, usually the lightest and most affordable. Great for pizza, pasta, and weeknight pours.
- Chianti Classico: The historic heartland between Florence and Siena, marked by the black rooster seal. Expect more structure and depth. Labels like Poggio Torselli Chianti Classico and Vignamaggio Chianti Classico show the style well.
- Chianti Classico Riserva: Aged longer before release, with richer fruit and tannin. Built for roasted and braised dishes.
- Chianti Rufina: A small, high-altitude subzone northeast of Florence known for elegance and lift. Grignano Chianti Rufina is a fine introduction.
- Governo and Super Tuscan blends: Styles that add roundness or international grapes. Useful when you want a softer, plusher red.
How to choose by taste and price
If you like bright, tart reds with savory edges, classic Sangiovese is your lane. If you prefer softer, fruit-forward reds, look to Governo styles or blends with a little Merlot. Budget bottlings such as Danzante Chianti and Fratelli Chianti deliver honest Tuscan character at an easy price, while names like Volpaia Chianti Classico, Piegaia Chianti Classico, and Da Vinci Chianti Classico step up in concentration. Rigoletto Chianti is a reliable crowd-pleaser for parties and large-format pours, and Terra Dei Falchi Chianti in the 1.5L bottle is ideal for a table of guests. Unsure where to start? Take our wine taste quiz and we will point you toward the right bottle.
Serving and pairing
Serve Chianti slightly below room temperature, around 60 to 65 degrees Fahrenheit, in a standard red glass. The acidity cuts through tomato sauce, cured meats, aged pecorino, and grilled steak. Riserva and Classico bottlings reward a short decant.
