The story

The story behind Gamla

Gamla comes from the Golan Heights Winery, founded in 1983 when eight Israeli settlements pooled their resources on volcanic soil high above the Galilee. The name honors an ancient Jewish city on a Golan hill that held out against Rome, and the labels carry a coin struck in its memory. The line sits mid-tier by design: French varietals, twelve months in French oak with a touch of American for the reds, and strict kosher handling from crush to bottle by Sabbath-observant staff.

We have stocked Gamla through every vintage cycle since the early days, and the Cabernet has never needed an apology. The parent winery took Wine Enthusiast New World Winery of the Year in 2012.

The Sauvignon Blanc is $16.99, the Chardonnay $17.99, and the Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir and Riesling all sit at $19.99. That puts the reds squarely in the accessible premium tier, roughly $17 to $22 by the research, which is where kosher wine stops being a compromise and starts being dinner. Gamla questions, answered

Is Gamla wine kosher?
Yes. Gamla is certified kosher for Passover and year round, typically under the OU or local rabbinical authority, with the entire process from crushing to bottling handled by Sabbath-observant staff on designated equipment.
Where is Gamla wine made?
Gamla is produced in Israel by the Golan Heights Winery, founded in 1983, using grapes from high-altitude volcanic vineyards in the Golan Heights and the Upper Galilee.
Is Gamla wine mevushal?
It depends on the batch. Gamla is exported in both mevushal, flash-pasteurized, and non-mevushal variants, so check the back label or ask us before you buy.
What does Gamla Cabernet Sauvignon taste like?
Rich dark berry fruit with tobacco and oak complexity, aged twelve months in French oak with a small American oak component. Serve it slightly cool, around 65 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
